It’s the Thursday after Morgana and Evaleen have returned from London. We are all out for drinks for the SWIM meet and even Tiffany has joined us. Due to her son still being in the hospital she hasn’t shown up the past few times we all met. Luckily, David has woken from his coma but he has a long road ahead of physical and occupational therapy.
Morgana is uncomfortable around Evaleen and I can understand why. From what Evaleen and Morgana have explained everything good and bad and in between has gone down at their company. I wouldn’t want their lives right now if you paid me. Especially now as Alexander and I continue to get to know each other. I am happy getting to know him, us spending time together. This is a first for me, wanting to be with a guy in this way. I guess both of us will be having firsts with each other.
I am bursting, wanting to tell them but they have enough dramas to deal with. We finally get a break when Evaleen and Morgana decide to head off to the ladies room. No doubt to discuss more about the dramas.
“I came here tonight to find out what is going on but the way those two are acting I almost don’t want to know.” Tiffany grimaces as she takes a sip of her fruity drink through her tiny straw.
“Yeah, it’s not good. So I almost hate to ask but how if Henrik?” My nosey brain is itching for more information.
Tiffany sighs and shakes her head.
“Drunk. I haven’t seen him this bad since his parents died over a decade ago. He wouldn’t even let me in his apartment until this morning and he looked like an extra from The Walking Dead.”
I groan taking a sip of the dark lager in my glass. The hairs on the back of my neck stand up and I get the feeling someone is watching me. I turn my head and peer around the bar but just see people in suits and ties who recently got off work.
Turning my attention back to Tiffany as she starts to speak again.
“Oh and the smell. Luckily he has a maid who cleans up after him but no one made him shower. He smelled of sweat, alcohol and some sort of meat product that was past it’s sell by date. I made him get a shower while I was there. Edgar showed up as I was leaving so hopefully he can talk some sense into Henrik.”
I nod but keep getting distracted feeling eyes are on me.
“Did Henrik tell you anything?”
Tiffany shakes her head.
“He kept mumbling something about being selfish but that was it. What’s wrong?” Tiffany asks while her eyes dart between me and the rest of the bar.
“I just get the feeling I am being watched. Do you feel that?”
“No. Who would be watching you?” She shakes her head.
Right after she asks the question Alexander floods my brain. When I realize his eyes are most likely on me I scan the crowd and then spot him. He is sitting in a booth on the other side of the bar with a black hoodie on so his face is obscured. His head tilts in my direction and I can only see blue eyes glow through the darkness of his hood. It is sort of creepy, but that is Alexander. He has the little bit of weird about him that makes my heart race just before it turns into heat.
“Excuse me for a minute Tiffany. I think I see someone I know. I’ll be back.” Glancing back at Tiffany as she nods and takes a sip from her straw. I scoot out of our black leather booth and head over to where Alexander is seated. On my way I see Evaleen and Morgana coming out of the bathroom and know Tiffany won’t be alone for long.
“Hey there stalker.” I stop beside Alexander who glances up a little startled to see me.
“Oh, hey. So you saw me.”
I scoot into the other side of the booth with a darkwood rectangular table between us.
“It’s hard to miss a large man with a hoodie trying to hide amongst preppy business people. You should have worn khakis and a white button up shirt if you wanted to blend in. Why are you here?”
I haven’t seen him in a few days as I have been comforting Morgana though the Payne sexcapade that has caused her life to turn upside down. Also, work and painting. Being with Alexander has inspired me to paint non-stop in my free time.
“I miss you Aria. Come home with me tonight.” He turns on his puppy dog eyes at me and it’s so hard to say no to him like this. He has to know the power he wields with his eyes. They are like his superpower, melting anything in it’s path.
“Stop with your voodoo eyes Alexander. You are making it so hard to say no. I can’t tonight. I am going to Morgana’s parents for dinner.”
He nods understanding my relationship with her parents is very important to me. Alexander reaches for my hand and massages my palm with his fingers.
“She’s coming to visit.” He announces like I am suppose to know what he means.
“Who? I don’t understand.”
“My mother. Next week, she is coming back from her vacation in Europe and stopping by Chicago for a few days before heading to Miami again. That’s where she lives, Miami. Though she is rarely there, usually traveling. Living off my father’s money.”
“Doesn’t your father mind? Her constantly spending that money?”
I can’t believe people live like that. Just throwing away money because they can. Alexander shakes his head and smirks. He watches our fingers intertwine as if it’s the only thing keeping him present.
“I don’t think he can care since he’s dead. He passed two years ago and a quarter of his estate and fortune went to my mom, while I got the rest.”
“Oh. I am sorry Alexander. I thought your father was alive.”
He breathes in a ragged breath before turning his gaze up to mine.
“No. Before he died I would see him once a year at Christmas. It was a joke really, pretending we were this perfect family. My mom who hated him because he constantly cheated on her with young women and was never around to help raise me. My father, who hated my mom because she had basically told him not to come around unless he could be a decent husband and father. They paraded me around at various holiday parties to make it seem we were a happy family, but come the New Year, my dad would fly to some island in the Caribbean to be with his latest girlfriend. Two years ago his plane went down off the coast of North Carolina. They never found his body or that of his girlfriend’s. Funny enough, the pilot lived but he doesn’t remember anything about it. Just taking off with my dad and his girlfriend on board and that’s it.”
I squeeze his hand and then bring them to my lips to kiss the tips of his fingers.
“I am so sorry Alexander. That is awful.”
“Yeah, well I wasn’t that close to my father so in a way I was relieved he wouldn’t bother us anymore.”
Alexander is looking at me but I can tell he doesn’t really see me. I am starting to think we have a lot more in common. His father is dead and mine is alive, but might as well not be with how much I see him. Both of us having a lot of resentment towards our parents.
“You mentioned your mother is coming.” I want to steer him away from talking about his father. It is hard to see him upset despite what he tells me about relief in his father’s death. I know there is too much pain there and I want to take a step back and talk about lighter things.
“Yes, next Tuesday. She wants to meet you.”
His grip firms and starts to hurt. I pull my hands away from his grasp and shake them out.
“Ow. That hurt.”
“I’m sorry Aria. It’s just I’m nervous to have you meet her. I didn’t tell her about you, but she knew. She always knows.”
How can that be possible? His home is like Fort Knox and he rarely goes out.
“How on Earth can she know Alexander?”
“She has spies everywhere.”
“Is she in the government?”
He shakes his head and then widens his eyes as he lets out a small laugh.
“No, but the government would love to have her. She is a rich woman, who loves her son and always wants to be in control. Of course she has spies finding out what is happening to me.”
Wow, his mother is already scaring me and I haven’t even met her.
“So, uh, do I just show up on Tuesday for lunch or dinner?”
“No. She wants a private meeting with you. My mom will send a car to pick you up wherever you are. Like I said she knows everything, so you could be grocery shopping or at lunch and a car will pull up in the parking lot ready to pick you up when you are done. Then you will meet her, most likely for tea, in her hotel room for a private meeting.”
“My God, this sounds like I’m joining some top secret organization, not meeting your mom.”
He smirks and nods his head.
“In a way Aria, you are.”
What the hell?
