“I need a drink!” I state as my purse hits the oak table in the bar where Evaleen, Aria and Tiffany are already seated and several drinks ahead of me.
“Payne?” Evaleen smirks at me.
I push my way into the black leather padded booth forcing Tiffany to squeeze next to Aria. I understand why Evaleen hates Henrik, but sometimes I want more sympathy then snark.
“Of course, but not what you think Bechmann.”
She nods with a grimace on her face.
“I’m sorry. I just wish he would see what he has with you.”
“Well, let’s forget the men tonight and focus on the highlight of the evening. I sold a few paintings today for lots of Benjamins!”
Aria tries her best to get her groove on sandwiched between Evaleen and Tiffany. She winds up knocking the table causing Evaleen’s bottle of beer to roll off and crash.
“That’s right let’s get crazy up in here. I’m rich! I need to throw things,” Aria exclaims lifting her wine glass but is thwarted at the last minute by Evaleen’s hand grasping her wrist.
“Just don’t,” Evaleen shakes her head.
Aria frowns and pouts like a five year old, slouching back into the booth.
“Fine Evaleen you have won this time, but next time I will succeed!” Aria points to the ceiling with one hand while grabbing her glass with the other. She takes a swig and slams the glass down hard enough to break off the stem.
“You’ve have officially been cut off Dixon. No more breaking things.” Evaleen pushes the broken glass to the edge where a waiter is already on the floor cleaning up the broken beer.
“Whatever MOM! Can’t I celebrate for once? I have never sold my work to anyone outside my family. And the guy who bought the paintings is some big time art collector. So, who knows? You could be sitting next to the future Andy Warhol.”
Aria crosses her arms over her chest and sticks her chin up in triumph.
“Congratulations Aria. I always said you could do it. I love your paintings and I am glad others see that too,” I contribute in support while reaching past Tiffany and patting Aria on the back.
“So who bought them?” Tiffany slowly sips her fruity looking drink with a lime wedge on the edge.
“A Mr. A. Hawthorne. Everyone knows of him but no one knows what he looks like or anything about him really. But he must have a lot of money with all the art he buys. The work is being shipped to an address tomorrow. I almost want to sneak along just to catch a glimpse of him.”
Aria is rubbing her hands together and I know this can only mean one thing, she is planning something. She has a habit of coming up with wild schemes that often times get her in trouble. I feel this is one of those times.
“Remember the last time you hatched a plan Aria? The Vancouver police were after us. The one trip I get outside of this country and you nearly have us deported due to your wild curiosity. Don’t do anything stupid.” I tell her.
The waiter finally finishes cleaning up her mess and I order a glass of wine. While perusing their desserts menu I notice only cinnamon dippers and a chocolate chip cookie on the list. Classy. What do I expect from a sports bar off Michigan Avenue. Well, no cake for me tonight. Just have to drown my sorrows in wine. This night should end well.
After a few minutes my drink arrives and we are full in conversation.
“I am going to call it an early night everyone. David had some tests done today and I want to talk to the doctor about the results.” Tiffany announces while staring off to the far corner of the room.
“Any progress on his condition?” I lay a hand on her arm and give a light squeeze.
She just nods but sighs.
“Yes and no. He came out of the coma a few weeks ago, but I have yet to see improvement to his muscles. The physical therapist tells me it takes time to build up strength due to some atrophy from years of not using his legs and arms constantly. I’m just worried he might have to have another surgery. I don’t think I can handle going through that again.”
Tiffany props her elbows on the table and buries her head in her hands as she starts to cry. This causes all of us to surround her in a bubble of hugs. It is at this moment I realize how lucky I am that all the people I love are healthy and living life how they want, even Henrik.
We hear some mumbling from Tiffany and ease back.
“I’m okay you guys. Thanks for the hugs I just needed to let that out. Sorry for being a Debbie Downer when Aria had such great news.”
Aria pushes her green polished fingertip into Tiffany’s face.
“No! You are not a Debbie Downer. You are our friend and we love you. If I could give you all this money so David could walk on his own I would in a heartbeat. Whatever you need lady we will be here for you. You are my friend!”
Aria hooks her in a head lock and starts to cry into Tiffany’s brown hair. Evaleen breaks in and rescues Tiffany by pulling Aria away.
“Come on Dixon, let’s give Blackburn some room.”
“I need to go pee.” Aria announces as she pushes Evaleen out of the booth and stammers away.
“I should be heading to the hospital. Thanks ladies for the evening. I had fun.” Tiffany scoots out and Evaleen gives her one last hug before Tiffany heads to the door.
“So how has Payne been since you came back Drake?” Evaleen asks as she sits back into the booth.
Waving the waiter over to refill my glass I hand it over before answering.
“Non-existent until today. I think he still misses me.”
Evaleen chuckles to herself and looks down at Tiffany’s abandoned drink, picking it up to finish it.
“Of course he does Drake. You are the best thing to ever happen to that man. It is just too bad he is too chicken shit to see it. Maybe one day he will realize money and a job alone can never bring true happiness. As much as Payne is a prick...and he is a prick...he is also an intelligent man. I think he will figure it out, but with you it might be too late when he does. You are a super-fine woman Drake. It won’t be long until men will be beating down your door.”
Perhaps Evaleen is right. Maybe it is too late for Henrik.
