It’s the Tuesday after coming back to Mimir. Oh wait, you didn’t think I would continue with the sexy times with Mr. Payne did you? Oh no...no...no. You have got to get the book for that. That’s right, the crazy hot (and it was HOT) sex scene is in The Payne In The Blog book. The book is free, so it’s not like I am making you pay.

There, that should satisfy you hungry beasts! Hmm is it weird I want cake now? Anyway back to the Tuesday after. Let’s see... Mr. Payne has stayed true to his word that last Thursday was the last time we would be intimate. He is doing such a good job I am starting to hate him again. Not hate, that is such a harsh word, maybe dislike a whole lot and want to throw things at him, heavy things.
Let’s take today for example. It is three in the afternoon and he has said three words to me so far. Three. They are as follows: Ms., Drake, and no. Oh, but this is better than Friday when I didn’t see him at all and Monday where he was in meetings most of the day so I was left with copious amounts of pink sticky notes on my desk.
I am sitting here at my desk trying to focus on writing up an email to Mr. Harvey Denton at Denton Corporation about a future branding partnership when all I want to do is walk into Mr. Payne’s office and slap him...and then make out with him. I have problems.
I look up to see Evaleen striding toward me like a 1992 Claudia Schiffer clone in a drab navy pant suit. Note to self: take Evaleen shopping.
“Hey Bechmann. What’s up?”
She takes her usual seat on the edge of my desk and picks a note up from the pile of post its.
“Oh not much. I just wanted to see how things are now that you are back.”
I lean back in my chair and put my feet up on the desk, sending a few pink pieces of paper to the ground.
“You know the usual. He is now just grunting at me when he needs something. Words, apparently, are not meant for the little people.” I roll my eyes as the words fall out of my mouth.
“Evaleen just nods and picks up a few more notes to read.
“So tell me why you wanted to come back? Seriously Morgana, you can get a job at so many other companies. I would even write you a letter of recommendation if you wanted. Why here? Why put up with Payne when you don’t have to?”
She is staring at me right now, ignoring the paper in her hand. If this were a movie the music would start up and a flashback would happen that explains everything. But this isn’t a movie is it. There is no tidy reason that makes everything come together in a sweet little package.
At first when I heard about the Executive Development Program in my senior year of college I thought great! Sure, there were lots of companies that did that, but back then Mimir was the cool new up and coming business. Many of the women at my school were in love with Jacob Mimir, the founder. I was just in love with the respect and power I could have if I ever got to work alongside him.
I figured the path to the program wasn’t going to be easy, so when the job as Mr. Payne’s assistant appeared I knew this would be the test that would make or break me. Though I knew he was rumored to be a mega jerk I didn’t care I just wanted in that program. The odd thing about all this is that when he is a dick I sort of like it. I don’t mean I want him to play with my emotions; I am referring to when he is impatient about work and expects nothing but the best. When that little vein pulses to life on his forehead as he struggles to keep calm because some lackey can’t answer his simple question, I get all tingly inside. All the things that cause people to fear him make me want to rip his clothes off.
This is why I stay. I will not find a better boss than Mr. Payne. He knows what he is doing, knows how to get it done and actually values my opinion when he does talk to me. So I put up with the emotional roller coaster ride to learn from him and hopefully one day to call him my peer and not just my boss.
Shrugging my shoulders I know I can’t really explain all this to Evaleen so I just say, “I guess I like punishment.”
I smirk and she puts her finger in her mouth pretending to gag. When she recovers she grabs a pen and writes on the back of one Mr. Payne’s pink notes and gives it to me.
“Here I think you might want to consider this again.”
I look down at the paper and see the dating website she told me about last week.
“Maybe you are right. I need to just move on. There has got to be another gorgeous, sexy, intelligent man out there that can hypnotize me with his eyes. Henrik can’t be the only one like that.”
She is pretending to gag again. I push the paper in my pocket just as Mr. Payne’s door opens. My head turns to see him with his briefcase in his hand. His eyes are barely visible through slits as he glares at Evaleen.
“Ms. Drake. I have to leave early. When you are done with your work feel free to head out too.”
He tells me all this never taking his eyes off of Evaleen.
“Thank you Mr. Payne.”
His looks at me and nods. Henrik’s gazes lingers longer than usual and for a moment I think he is about to tell me something. I’m proven wrong as he closes his eyes and sighs. Finally, upon opening them he stares at the floor and starts to walk away.
“So, Drake I think you will have plenty of men to choose from there.”
Evaleen is pointing to the pocket where I shoved the paper but my eyes are still on Henrik. He stops abruptly after Evaleen speaks and begins to turn. My breath catches at what I see. Pain.
I suddenly feel like the worst person on Earth.
