The room is dark with one light shining down from the ceiling and Aria, Evaleen and I are sitting directly under its glare. The way the two men acted when dragging us in here I am surprised they didn’t tie up and gag everyone.
The suit is standing in front of us with his arms folded across his chest. I glance over at Aria who is looking around frantically, while Evaleen is squinting back at the suit.
“Why are you here?” The suit directs his question at Evaleen.
She just leans back in her chair and smirks, “I don’t believe I have to answer that unless I have a lawyer present. And considering you are holding us here against our will, I would think you should be answering our questions.”
The suit’s eyes flicker to the corner of the room and from behind us the guy with the hoodie steps into the light. He turns and looks us over with his panty melting eyes. Finally his gaze lands on Aria and for a split second I see his lips twitch at the corner.
Mr. Melty Eyes steps closer to Aria and kneels directly in front of her. He places his hands on her knees and I can see her body shiver. I’m surprised she doesn’t faint because I’m about to and he isn’t even touching me.
“Could you please tell me why you came with the painting? You see, I’m a little concerned for the safety of the art and the people here. Only 2 delivery men were hired to move the painting, so you can imagine my surprise when three beautiful women show up as well.” Mr. Melty Eyes speaks in a warm and equally hypnotic tone as his fingers gently rubs circles over Aria’s knees.
At this point I am ready to give him the keys to my apartment and social security number. The melty eyes and trance inducing voice has me drooling a bit. Actually, I am glad it is so dark so no one can see me wiping the saliva from my chin. From the way Aria looks I think she is having the same reaction.
“We...I...wanted to meet Mr. A. Hawthorne. You see I am the artist and I let my curiosity get the better of me. I had heard he is a bit of a recluse and I wanted to see the man who would be interested in one of my paintings. No one has ever liked them before. So I was ecstatic to hear that a famous art collector bought one. Please don’t tell him! I promise my friends and I will leave and not come back.”
Aria places her hand on top of his and for a brief moment I think they are going to kiss. Where is the popcorn when I need it? This is like something out of a movie and for once it’s not happening to me. Wait. It kind of is happening to me. Shit. At least I didn’t put myself into this situation. Wait. Yes I did. Damn it! No wonder Brain hates me so much.
“Oh, now you get it Morgana! After you are kidnapped in a darken garage at two in the morning, now you come to the realization that your adventures can be life threatening.” Brain is rolling her squiggly eyes at me.
“I only came along to make sure Aria didn’t get herself killed. If you remember I didn’t want her to do this at all. If you should feel sorry for anyone, feel sorry for Aria’s Brain. Imagine what that organ goes through!” I point out to Brain.
Brain just shivers at my words and runs into a room, shutting and locking the door behind her. I guess I am on my own here.
“Fine...uh...I never got your name?” Mr. Melty Eyes asks as he stands taking Aria’s hand to help her up.
“It’s Aria.” Her words are breathless.
“Aria, it’s nice to meet you. If you and your friends would like to come with me I can take you to meet Mr. A. Hawthorne.”
We get up and are led out of the room. I notice as we make our way down a white hallway he never lets go of Aria’s hand. We crowd into a rather large elevator and I glance at Evaleen who is still shooting daggers at buzz cut. I nudge her in the side to get her attention.
“Hey, do you think they are taking us somewhere to muffle our cries as they murder us?” I whisper in to Evaleen’s ear.
“No, blondie here couldn’t hurt a butterfly. As for mister gorgeous next to Aria, I think he is too interested in her to do any harm to anyone.”
The elevator stops and the doors open to a hallway with light hardwood flooring and pale blue painted walls. At the end of the hall is a steel door lined with rivets which is in sharp contrast to the lavish landscape oil painting that line the walls.
“Oh my god is that a Thomas Cole? I can’t believe he has one. That can’t be real.” Aria stumbles and walks straight into Mr. Melty Eyes back as she stares at the painting.
“Yes it is one of the Thomas Cole paintings that Mr. A. Hawthorne has. And no it is not a fake.” He mentions with a little irritation in his voice as he steps aside to let us all pass.
Buzz cut stops to whisper something to Melty Eyes as the rest of us wonder into an apartment that could also pass as an art museum, if art museums had coffee tables, soft grey suede couches and mid-century modern living room décor scattered about. We must be in Mr. Hawthorne’s living room and I have already counted eight paintings (I recognize two of them as Warhols).
Aria has wondered off to worship the paintings along the wall and I feel like, if we are killed tonight she will die happy.
“Ladies, Mr. Gibson will get you anything you need. Aria, if you could come with me, I will take you to Mr. Hawthorne.” Melty Eyes walks toward a hallway and I watch Aria give me a look to let me know she is alright before she turns and follows him down the hall...
***Morgana has gone on hiatus for a few months as Aria steps into her place***
I look back at the Evaleen and Morgana as they take a seat on the Harvey Probber style couch. Morgana gives her usual skeptical smile while Evaleen starts to talk to Mr. Gibson.
I sigh knowing Morgana never takes risks which is why I was shocked when she said she would come with me tonight, but I have a feeling she is questioning her decision. That woman needs to have some fun.
Tonight has been a blast. Even if I meet Mr. Hawthorne and he turns out to be some crazy man with long curly fingernails and hair down to his toes, I will look back on this night knowing that something interesting happened. I am in a place that has better art then the Art Institute of Chicago. What is not to love about tonight? Oh, and the guy leading me to the eccentric Hawthorne is sexy times ten!
“Through here Aria.” The sexy times ten guy shows me through a thick wooden door and we walk into an office. I recognize the Picasso drawings that dot the wall but the dominate feature of this room seems to be the dark bookshelves that are bloated with books. A sleek black desk that looks more like a table, centers the room.
He moves to sit in the black leather chair in front of the desk and motions for me to sit on the opposite side in a small white chair. I do as he instructs and wait for him to speak. In these situations it’s best not to poke the hornets’ nest with silly questions. Trust me; I have been in a lot of these scenarios. Sometimes the police get involved, sometimes I talk my way out of it, but in the end I have my fun.
“So, Aria, I guess you want to meet Mr. Hawthorne now.” I notice his eyes fall to my lips as a thrill tingles up my spine.
“Yes...uh...I never got your name.”
He smirks and brings his fingertips together in front of him and grazes his bottom lip with them.
“You might as well know, but please remember Aria that this information is never to leave this room. My name is Alexander.”
I nod and wonder why no one can know his first name.
“Nice to meet you Alexander. When do I get to meet Mr. Hawthorne? Is he in another room?”
My questions sets him off as he starts to chuckle. He gets up and walks to right in front of me, leaning back on the desk. His eyes penetrate me and it’s hard to think straight. I want to strip naked and rub my body all over him, but I think that is a little too much even for me.
“Aria, I am Mr. Hawthorne. My name is Alexander Hawthorne.”
“No shit!” I blurt out without thinking.
