I love to laugh, like a lot! Anyone who knows me, either in person or on the interwebs knows this about me. I wrote my senior thesis about Monty Python and auditioned and got into Second City Conservatory Program. I know comedy. To me it’s an art form that should be indulged in by all. Everyone might not have the same sense of humor as me but they should laugh at something at some point in their lives.
Why am I ranting about comedy and laughing? Because as a contemporary/erotic romance writer I have decided to add comedy into my writing. It all started when I read a little book called Loved Hacked by a hilariously funny writer of the steamy book, Penny Reid. I loved her book and proceeded to buy and read her others and try to find other books/authors equally talented. The sad truth was there weren't many. At least I couldn't find them. I did discover N. M. Silber and one or two others, but other than that, blah.
I looked at some books that, how should I say this, tried to be funny, but...um...tried WAY to hard. You know that one guy at the party, the friend of a friend, who just wants to fit in so badly they are too loud, too obnoxious, and laugh too hard at everyone’s jokes. Yeah, that’s like some of the books I read.
There are actual rules to comedy. I think some of these not-so-funny-but-want-to-be funny writers don’t understand that. They just write wackadoo characters in wackadoo situations and voila funny. Uh, no! Doesn't work that way. I don’t want to read about a character that says, “Hey look at how crazy I am! And my friends, their crazy too! Laugh at us!”
So, I decided to put my learned talent to use. Yes, it is a learned talent. Some people are naturally gifted and need no lessons in life, but some of us need some direction to hone our talent. I studied and learned. I wrote papers, studied with teachers who have been doing it for decades and performed on stages where some greats in comedy once performed.
Since I am a writer now, it’s come to my attention that all this knowledge and learned talent might come in handy. Sure everyone likes sexy erotic romances, but they love to laugh. Why not combine the two. Therefore, I am here, today announcing a slight change in my writing style. You not only get the steamy love stories you have grown to love from me, but you also get a few good laughs to boot!
I feel good about this change and hope you all do too. I am planning a series that should come out next year that will be all that I talk about here. Get ready for funny and sexy wrapped up in a drool worthy series. Each book will be about a different woman, and of course her love interest, but they are all friends tied together by a tragic event. Check out my Pinterest board as I have already started to grab pins for inspiration for the characters.
